40th Anniversary Two Virgins

If you like John Lennon with his hits like “Imagine” or “Woman”,you better not to hear this albums. John Lennon wrotes on the sleeves :” John & Yoko recorded the experimental sounds of Two Virgins the night before the morning they first made love.”It was midnight when we started ‘Two Virgins,’ it was dawn when we finished, and then we made love at dawn. It was very beautiful.”–JOHN LENNON
John Lennon and Yoko Ono: all instruments and vocals.Recorded, 1968.
John Lennon had a great musical talent. Rember that Lennon began seriously experimenting with ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ in “Revolver” (The Beatles) album 1966. Lennon took it to further lengths with Strawberry Fields Forever and Being for the Benefit for Mr. Kite in Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967,The Beatles), and even further with the bizarre notorious sound collage Revolution # 9. Somehow, through it all, John Lennon managed to retain great music. but this is pure shit.
Two Virgins is still best known for its notorious cover photo of John and Yoko posing naked and unashamed. It’s also remembered as a historical artifact: it was recorded overnight in Lennon’s mansion, before the couple consummated their relationship. But few have heard the record and fewer still have played it twice. Essentially, it’s the White Album’s “Revolution 9” stretched into a whole record of white noise, tape effects, discord, and screaming. The follow up, Life with the Lions, was more interesting musically, but Two Virgins is the sound that first made the world say: “What?” .

Take Two Virgins side 1 for example – it contains some concrete music with various birdsong loops and echoed muffles of talking. It is a kind of music?Nnot at all I think. the melodic john lennon seems to disappear into one who seems to be struggling with writer’s block – although at the time of recording Two Virgins, lennon was recording classics like ‘Julia’ and Happiness is a Warm Gun’ for the beatles’ white album (1968).

Two Virgins side 2 is again, drivel. An atonal organ solo by John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s ‘vocal improvisations’. Try pulling your cat’s guts out of its’ mouth and you’ll get roughly the same noise.

At the time of its release, this duo album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono gained its greatest notice for its cover, a photograph that depicted the two standing before the camera naked. The recording, too, can be described as naked, in that it contains no music that would interfere with one’s ability to hear the normal sounds of life. The record is not unlike what you might get if you turned on a tape recorder for a random half-hour in your home — snatches of inaudible conversation far away from the microphone, footsteps, wind, and so on. Conceptual “music” in the John Cage sense, yes, but not popular music of the kind with which John Lennon had been previously associated in any sense at all.
